Southside Districts of Esterwatch

Esterwatch sits on both the Northern and Southern banks of the Turazna River. Here now are the districts of the city’s Southside.

12. Temple District

The smallest district of the city, the Temple District is home to the great temple of Alabas the White God. It began as merely a small shrine where soldiers and their families could pray, but over the years and the city’s development, it has been built up as a massive white cathedral. Gardens and religious shops dot the district around the temple, and many priests live here, including High Priest Omnaran, the religious leader of the city, who lives in a mansion built on opposite the temple.

13. Warder’s Garden

This residential district has a reputation for piety and it is said that many of the city’s most religiously devout make their homes here. However in recent times the district has gained a more notorious reputation, with the rise of the street gang the White Warders. They hold themselves to be enforcers of Alabas’ will, and are particularly hostile to district outsiders and non-Imperials. Anyone walking the streets of Warder’s Garden should tread carefully, lest the White Warders take notice.

14. Eastgate

This large gate leads out East to the Grasslands, following the Trail of Horses. Many Grasslands traders congregate in the area around Eastgate, staying at inns and setting up makeshift stalls to sell common goods in a bazaar. A number of Steam Barons have set up offices in this district so they can more easily negotiate with Grasslands merchants regarding the rare ores and minerals often mined in the southern Grasslands. The Steam Barons compete for this trade without mercy.

15. Riverside

This district spans much of Esterwatch’s territory along the Turazna River, and is home to many a fisherman. Much of the district is taken up by residential buildings, spanning from the homes of lowly fishermen to the high-priced mansions of the city’s upper class who desire a more scenic view. The Riverside Alakar Restaurant is located in this district, built on the docks of the Turazna themselves. It is perhaps the most well-respected dining establishment in the city, and often entertains Esterwatch’s elite.

16. Dawn Quarter

While the Dawn Islanders of Esterwatch originally made their homes along the banks of the Turazna, they have slowly but surely been driven away from it by other ethnic groups. The Dawn Quarter houses the majority of the city’s Dawn Islander population, and many of them live just above the poverty line. There is much discontent in the Dawn Quarter; many residents desire to live closer to the water and are all-too-familiar with the history of their people in Esterwatch. The City Guard keeps a particularly close eye on the people of this district, suspecting them of plotting some violent revolution. This suspicion naturally serves to fan the flames of the Dawn Islanders’ anger. Many in the city consider the Dawn Quarter dangerous, but it still gets its fair share of visitors due to the presence of the Dawn Bazaar, where traders from the Dawn Islands often sell their goods. It is even said that some Sidhe from the Feylands set up shop at the Bazaar. Regardless, whether from a Dawn Islander or Fey, it is common knowledge that one can find nearly anything for sale in the Dawn Bazaar.

17. Arbor Commons

Arbor Commons is home to much of Esterwatch’s middle class. The homes here are evenly spaced out and often surrounded by trees. Many live in this district but work elsewhere in the city, often as bankers or clerks or businessmen. The district is often considered an idyllic place to raise a family, but recently a dark cloud has began to form over it. Unexplained animal attacks have begun to occur in Arbor Commons. Victims are badly hurt, but rarely killed (though it does happen), and no survivor recalls what attacked them. Paranoia is starting to take over the district, and many residents have become convinced that there is something distinctly supernatural about these attacks.

18. Golden Graves

The largest cemetery in Esterwatch. Much of the city’s dead are interred here. Headstones litter the scenery, and massive mausoleums stand against a grey sky. Many of these mausoleums reach deep into the Undercity, and Revenants tend to use them to travel into the city below and be among others of their kind.

19. Sunslumber

When Industry came to Esterwatch, some factories were built in this sparsely populated Residential District, then called Greatreach. However, a terrible disaster of Viarc and Machinery tore these factories apart, and even today a great black cloud hangs over much of the district. The residents of Sunslumber are often pale for lack of sunlight, and mysterious mutated creatures are said to thrive in the ruins of the old factories.

20. Soldier’s Rest

Esterwatch’s military history is on full display in Soldier’s Rest. It was founded as its own town, a small farming community where soldiers from Esterwatch fortress could retire with their families. As the city grew around the fortress, it eventually consumed Soldier’s Rest. Buildings here are built like miniature fortresses and are populated by farmers who tend to crops and livestock to feed much of the city with.
