Magic in Esterwatch

In the world of Esterwatch, magic is pervasive and everywhere. Anyone can learn to manipulate the forces of magic, and many individuals know one or two simple magical tricks.

Viarc

The most common form of magic comes from Viarc. Viarc is an arcane force that is generated by life. All living things give off Viarc in some way.

Most higher life-forms, such as humans, also give off Excess Viarc. This is Viarc that is generated by one’s life-force, but not utilized by the body. Instead it clings to the person as a field.

Game Mechanics

Excess Viarc is represented in game by Magic Points, which are spent to cast spells as per the normal Fantasy AGE rules.

The following changes are made to Fantasy AGE’s standard magic rules:

You start with MP equal to 10 + your Willpower and gain MP equal to your Willpower + 2 every level up to level 10, instead of starting with your 10 + Willpower + 1d6 and gaining your Willpower + 1d6 every level as you normally would. MP gains after level 10 are still calculated as normal.

Furthermore, because of the existence of Viarc, when your MP reaches 0, you may spend your HP in order to cast spells.

Note: All Esterwatch characters have MP, regardless of their class. The exception to this rule are Revenants, who do not generate Viarc, as they are creatures of the Void (see Dimensional Magic, below)

Dimensional Magic

Viarc, despite its magical properties, is ultimately a mundane force. The researchers at Esterwatch’s Viarc Institute have made great strides in understanding it scientifically.

Dimensional Magic, however, is different. It is a property of the Void, a vast expanse beyond the realms of existence. In the Void, the laws of physics and nature are fundamentally different. They are malleable and ever-changing.

In most cases, the Void is irrelevant to life. However, sometimes it bleeds through into the world. When this happens, the chaotic nature of the Void’s natural laws seep into reality, and any number of bizarre phenomena could occur as a result.

Perhaps the most dangerous aspect of Dimensional Magic is that it is anathema to Viarc. Creatures of the Void do not generate Viarc and have an innate resistance to spells powered by Viarc.
